Smoked Old Fashioned

Emma Rue’s Smoked Old Fashioned

Nothing says fall like a whiskey drink and the Old Fashioned is about as original as they come. Picture yourself sweater-clad snuggled up by a fire in a big leather wingback with this beverage in hand and you’ll have the quintessential autumn scene.

The Old Fashioned originally referred to a style of alcoholic beverage before it became a drink of its own. The earliest in-print references to the Old Fashioned date back to the 1800s. Thanks in part to President George Washington’s penchant for whiskey, in the 1770’s the Whiskey Cocktail became quite popular in the United States. It was a simple straightforward drink consisting of whiskey and aromatic bitters from the London-based apothecarist Richard Stoughton served straight up without any ice. As bartenders began to add flair to their drinks–think absynthe, chartreuse and various other liquors the term “Old Fashioned Whiskey Cocktail” was coined to request the original, simpler beverage.

Eventually ‘whiskey’ was dropped and the Old Fashioned became a cocktail composed of four basic ingredients–spirit, sugar, water, and bitters. Sometimes simple is the most delicious. At Emma Rue’s the combination of Elijah Craig’s Small Batch Bourbon with notes of cinnamon, nutmeg, clove and smoke and the flaming orange peel finish give the aroma and flavor of warmth in a silky smooth presentation. You can, of course, make adjustments to suit your own palette by experimenting with different Bourbons and Ryes. We recommend sipping slowly and think the experience is made even more enjoyable with a friendly companion, in book or human form.

Ingredients

1oz Elijah Craig Small Batch Bourbon
1 oz Emerald Giant Rye
Bar Spoon of Cinnamon Simple Syrup
2 dashes of Angostura Bitters
2 dashes of Orange Bitters
Laphroaig rinse on the glass
Flamed orange peel studded with cloves

Instructions

Best served in a chilled lowball glass. Spritz the glass with a fine mist of Laphroaig on the interior of the glass. If you don’t have Laphroaig on hand you can use any peaty Scotch you enjoy.

This is a stirred, not shaken cocktail, so use a small pitcher and a long spoon. Combine the bourbon, rye, simple syrup, and bitter dashes in the pitcher. Stir well to combine.

Add ice to your glass and pour drink over it. Finish with a thin slice of orange peel studded with cloves and lightly flamed with a torch. You can also skip the fire and simply twist the peel gently over the glass to express the oils from the skin before studding with cloves and adding to the top of your beverage.
