The Edible Inland Northwest Guide to Garland Ave

Did you know that there are over 80 local businesses in the Garland area?

Spokane’s Garland District has been a thriving community for almost 100 years! It all began in 1910 with a street rail system, and the area really started bringing attention to itself when the iconic Garland Theater opened in 1945. There has been continued growth ever since, especially when it comes to delicious food and drink options! This guide is just a sneak peek at some of our favorite eateries and food-centric, locally-owned businesses in the neighborhood.

We had a blast getting to know the owners, learning their stories, and enjoying delicious food and drinks along the way. We hope this guide will lead you to find some new favorite places and help you explore the magic of the Garland District. Bookmark this guide to learn more as we continue to take a closer look into these businesses and more over the next few months!

Garland Sandwich Shop

Kristen Speller opened The Garland Sandwich Shoppe in 2008, and she has seen tremendous growth in the 14 years since. “I love that those who frequent the Garland area have some connection to it. Whether they grew up in the area or used to have a business here.”

Located one block west of the historic Garland Theater, this little shop offers delicious paninis and deli sandwiches with simple ingredients, appealing to every sandwich lover’s appetite. For something new, try their crowd-favorite Southwestern Turkey or the Chipotle Sirloin Panini. And if you are looking for an even less traditional option, The Big Dill is their signature sandwich full of turkey, bacon, ham--all stuffed inside a giant dill pickle instead of bread!

North Hill on Garland

Before purchasing North Hill on Garland and returning to his hometown of Spokane, David Hayes owned a successful Italian restaurant on the Oregon coast.

“Although the Garland District isn’t a destination location right now, except for the theater, I believe it could be. One of my goals is to make North Hill on Garland a place customers want to visit from around the city.”

David took over the business in May 2021 and has since transitioned it from a pub into a full-service restaurant unlike any others found in the area. Chef James Spade is a seasoned culinary artist who has been in the Inland Northwest for 16 years and creates dishes that pair perfectly with David’s large collection of wines. Suggested wine pairings feature some of Hayes’ favorite Washington winemakers, like The Walls in Walla Walla, as well as an array of Italian imports. As the seasons change, dine on chicken-bacon pizza or cottage pie on the balcony and discover why North Hill is sure to be a Spokane treasure!

Garland Brew Werks

Another 2021 addition to the neighborhood was Garland Brew Werks, a local brewery on the east end of Garland.

Owner TJ Wallin and Brewmaster Adam Boyd say their OG: Original Garland IPA is a customer favorite, but with root beer and kombucha on tap, Garland Brew Werks is a fun and friendly option for the whole family.

“We love the neighborhood feel. It’s pretty amazing when your regulars live blocks away and walk to your shop. Garland has it all. The most charming movie theater in town. Vintage clothing, collectibles, used books, and dining.”

As summer weather comes around, try out a seasonal beer or two on their patio, along with a sampling of snacks, like their pretzel bites or the Garland Apple Flatbread. GBW keeps things fresh with weekly trivia and rotating taps making it a great neighborhood spot to gather with family and friends.

The Garland Mercantile

Taryn Graves took over ownership of this neighborhood shop in 2020. Since then, she and her husband have done an incredible job curating items typically only found at farmers’ markets or from small producers, providing a way for all of us to support some of our favorite local makers all year-round.

And not only does Taryn own a business in Garland, but she also lives in the neighborhood and serves on the Garland Business District board.

“We love being a part of such a tight-knit community that values small businesses and supporting local. Garland is a vibrant neighborhood that is bustling with both tourists and locals. It’s been a fantastic community to call home.”

Stop in and try a sample or two or pick up a unique gift from a PNW artisan. From Greenbluff fruits and vegetables to home decor, there is something for everyone--whether you are shopping for yourself or looking for a gift.

Pitotti Coffee Brûlée Latte

Pitotti Coffee

Pitotti Coffee opened its doors in 2020, but owner Chris Pitotti and his family have been roasting coffee for over 10 years. The family-owned shop is connected to the Gathering House, where people come to meet from different places around the city.

“The sense of community within the businesses and residents of Garland creates a Sesame Street-type atmosphere. There is a fun-loving, funky, and friendly vibe here. With an eclectic variety of shops, if you don’t find what you are looking for, at least you will have a great time trying.”

Guests of Pitotti Coffee will enjoy trying unique and delicious drinks like the Cold-Fashioned featured on their super-secret menu or their Brulée Latte, finished and served right at your table.

Roasted in house, Pitotti’s Coffee is rich and smooth, serving as an excellent base for all of their drinks and making for a wonderful experience in the neighborhood.

Rocket Bakery

As one of the neighborhood’s go-to cafes, Rocket Bakery has served delicious coffee and homemade pastries for over 25 years. Their journey began in 1992, and they have since become a staple in the Spokane community. The perfect atmosphere for an afternoon escape, we suggest you grab a cappuccino, one of their familiar pink cookies, and find a cozy seat in the back with something to read from Book Traders next door.

Mary Lou’s Milk Bottle

There is no way to talk about the Garland District without touching on the iconic Milk Bottle. Towering nearly 40 feet tall in the middle of the walkable neighborhood is Mary Lou’s Milk Bottle, a classic American diner known for award-winning ice cream and milkshakes.

Owned and operated by the extended Ritchie family, grown children Tom, Dan, and Marie run the diner, a food-truck business and Second Wind Drinks located just across the street, leaving Mom and Dad to make all the ice cream!

Maple-nut and banana ice creams are great if you’re just looking for a scoop or a sundae, but make sure you come hungry enough for a Patty Melt or a Reuben hot off the grill. In the springtime, their cute little patio tables are a great place to gather and enjoy all the sights and sounds of the Garland District.
